Free Birth Control for Everyone

Not sure if you guys have seen this, but the department of Health and Human Services (HHS) has dictated that insurance companies must provide birth control to women free of charge. That means zero out-of-pocket dollars. A woman who wishes to be on birth control will not be required to pony up a co-pay.

In a column at The Daily Beast, writer Amanda Marcotte can’t seem to understand why those with conservative ideals would reject this. She goes on, blathering about reduced costs as pregnancies are supposedly reduced and all that. I think she either misses the point or intentionally has her head buried in the sand. I will agree there is a morality issue here but that is not part of the argument from the point of view from most on the right. It has to do with money and the federal government’s lack of it and it also has to do with the feds sticking their nose where it doesn’t belong.

I really have no issues with women obtaining birth control in any form. I am also not so much a prude as to say that pre-marital sex is a bad thing and that it can or should be controlled. This is a personal choice. I do counsel my boys on the responsibilities of sex before marriage and do tell them the wise decision is to wait at least to a point where you are able to either get married (don’t support “shotgun” weddings) or at the very least, provide for the child. And I always counsel them that until they are married, birth control should be at the forefront of their minds. The responsibility lies with both, not just the woman.

Keith Olbermann at it Again (UPDATE)

Just when we thought he was going to disappear forever, Keith Olbermann, like Lazarus, rises from the dead.  And as he usually does when things are going south for him, he attacks a conservative pundit, this time wishing S.E. Cupp's parents had visited Planned Parenthood.

Well, it might at least double to four the number of people who watch his show.

The Antiabortion Crowd’s Latest Target: African Americans

OK, where to get started with this one. Let’s take a look at “target”.  Isn’t this word inflammatory and will cause people to go on a shooting spree? How many times did the liberal press point out that Sarah Palin’s target map was the root of all evil? I guess it is OK for Yahoo! News to use the word target and use it a way that makes it seem like being aimed at.

Now we’ll look at “antiabortion”. When you are a liberal and want to make the pro-life folks look a little less human, you use the term antiabortion. Throw antiabortion with the word crowd and you have unruly mob or “group with nefarious intent”.

Did Obama Read Orwell?

President Obama has stated several times that he likes the way the Brits run their health care system. I wonder if this was one of the points of their system that he likes?

According to Dr Daphne Austin, it all comes down to money and how it is spent:

“We are doing more harm than good by resuscitating 23-weekers. I can’t think of very many interventions that have such poor outcomes. For me the big issue is that we’re spending an awful lot of money on treatments that have very marginal benefits. I would prefer to free up that money to spend on providing support to people who have much more lifelong chronic conditions.”

Defunding Planned Parenthood

Over the course of my life the issue of abortion has run a course from slightly supporting its use and easy availability to indifference to where I am now. I am pro-life with some qualifiers. Although I do firmly believe that life begins at conception abortion “privileges” is the law of the land and until such things change, it should be available. However, I do believe that when future generations look back on us through the prism of history there will be great shame. Abortion has extinguished 50 million lives in the past nearly 40 years. I also do not believe that abortion should be used as a form of birth control.  Planned Parenthood does supply low income women with means for birth control such as condoms, but they also consider abortion under the banner of “reproductive rights”. But one place I do draw the line is using my tax dollars in any fashion to fund abortions.

A couple of weeks back Mike Pence (R-IN) sponsored a bill in the House to basically defund Planned Parenthood. Pence has been a long-time supporter of overturning Roe v. Wade and his bill was in response to the taping of what could be considered less than honorable actions (illegal?) by some staff members at Planned Parenthood clinics.  The bill was able to pass the House mostly along party lines (WA was down the part line).  Now the bill goes to the Senate where it faces a pretty stiff challenge from the democrat majority.  PP gets about $300 million for the government, which is about one-third of their annual budget. This Title 10 money is not used to fund abortions directly.

Planned Parenthood Could be in Trouble

Dear readers, I would like for you to take a look at the videos contained at this link, or if you are a bit squeamish, jut read the stories. If you are not a regular reader of conservative news web sites, then you might be unaware that an undercover investigation by a young woman named Lila Rose (more stories here) has uncovered that some Planned Parenthood clinics were advising the investigators how to avoid get caught trafficking in minors.

After this story broke a couple of days ago, the media immediately rushed in to condemn, wait for it, Lila Rose, Live Action, and Andrew Breitbart. Instead of going after Planned Parenthood for allowing the type of activity uncovered by Lila Rose, they attacked those that uncovered and released the transgressions. When PP did release a statement over this issue it said they have “alerted federal authorities to a potential multistate sex trafficking ring.”  But this looks like it was released after they got wind of what was about the break. Kind of like shutting the barn door after the cows got out.
