I would like each of you to take a look at this painting by Norman Rockwell. I ran across it while reading this article at Big Journalism. I have been a fan of Rockwell for many years. You won’t find this powerful image in many of the collections of his paintings that have been published over the years. The impending violence goes against much of what Rockwell painted over the years. Rockwell did this image for an article for “Look” magazine, but it was not published. Although the movie was fictional the event depicted in this painting inspired “Mississippi Burning” staring Willem Defoe.
I think the painting does an outstanding job of showing the pain, the hope, and the struggle that was the Civil Rights movement of the 1950’s and 60’s.
